Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP)

Participating Alberta municipalities

Financing repaid through property taxes

Terms and rates are set by each participating municipality, so we are not publishing a single figure. Edmonton publishes its own terms on the page linked below.

What it helps with
Spreading the upfront cost of energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades over time.
Who may qualify
Property owners in Alberta municipalities that run a CEIP. Availability depends on your municipality.
Important requirements
This is financing, not a rebate. The loan is tied to the property rather than to you personally. Alberta does not currently run a province-wide home efficiency rebate, so what is available depends heavily on where you live.

How it works

Step by step in Alberta

The order matters more than most people expect. Doing step three before step two is the usual reason a claim fails.

  1. 1

Know that Alberta has no broad provincial retrofit rebate

Unlike the other provinces we serve, there is no province-wide grant paying a set amount per upgrade. Anyone telling you otherwise is worth a second look.

  2. 2

Check whether your municipality runs Clean Energy Improvement Program financing

CEIP is financing, not a rebate. It is offered through participating municipalities and repaid through your property taxes, so it lowers the up-front cost rather than the total cost.

  3. 3

Check the federal provisions that apply everywhere

The Home Accessibility Tax Credit and CRA medical-expense provisions apply in Alberta exactly as they do elsewhere in Canada.

  4. 4

Do not confuse the Alberta Energy Rebate with an efficiency program

The Alberta Energy Rebate is a $100 cost-of-living payment toward groceries, fuel and everyday essentials for households with total income of $225,000 or less. Applications run 1 July to 30 September 2026. It has nothing to do with home upgrades, but it is money, and the window is short.

Before you sign

What to watch out for

Rebates attract people who are not really offering rebates. These are the things worth checking before any money or signature changes hands.

Treat any “Alberta home energy rebate” claim sceptically

The province wound down its broad efficiency agency years ago. Sites still carrying its branding are not a safe source for what is payable today.

Nobody legitimate charges a fee to “unlock” a rebate

Every program on this page is applied for free, either by you or by your contractor. If someone wants a payment, a deposit or a subscription before your rebate can be “released”, that is not how any of these work.

Check the amount on the administrator's own page, not on a quote

Rebate figures change, and contractor websites go stale. Every card above links to the page the administrator publishes. If a quote shows a bigger number than the official page, ask why in writing before you sign.

Timing voids more claims than anything else

Several of these programs require an evaluation, a registration or a pre-approval before the work starts, and most have a deadline to apply afterwards. Starting early or applying late is the most common reason a homeowner who did everything else right gets nothing.

Be careful at the door

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warns about ads offering grants or equipment below market value, high-pressure door-to-door tactics, and contractors who take a deposit and then disappear or do poor work. Research the company before you give out your details or sign anything. Suspected fraud can be reported to the CAFC on 1-888-495-8501.

Never hand over your utility account login

No program needs your Hydro or utility password. A contractor may need your account number for an application; that is not the same thing.

Get it in writing

The program name, the exact amount, who applies, and what happens if the rebate is refused, all on the quote. “We will take care of the rebate” is not a term you can hold anyone to.
