How it works

Step by step in Ontario

The order matters more than most people expect. Doing step three before step two is the usual reason a claim fails.

  1. 1

Work out which path you are on

Save on Energy runs two routes. Doing two or more upgrades puts you on the assessment path. Doing single upgrades such as a smart thermostat does not need an assessment at all.

  2. 2

On the assessment path, book the assessment before any work

The program is explicit: “Before beginning any work”, request a list of Service Organizations in your area. A registered energy advisor from an approved Service Organization carries out the assessment. Work started beforehand is not covered.

  3. 3

    Get your custom report

The advisor gives you recommendations identifying which upgrades suit your home.

  4. 4

    Have the work done

On the assessment path you use your preferred contractor and complete two or more upgrades. Off it, heat pumps and attic insulation need a program-qualified contractor who handles the rebate paperwork; solar has no qualified-contractor list so you choose your own; thermostats and appliances you can buy and install yourself.

  5. 5

    Book the follow-up assessment

After the upgrades are installed you complete a final assessment with the same registered energy advisor.

  6. 6

    Get paid

Once the advisor submits the documentation, the rebate arrives within 60 days by cheque, or 30 days by Interac e-Transfer. Completing three upgrades rather than two unlocks an additional $500.

Before you sign

What to watch out for

Rebates attract people who are not really offering rebates. These are the things worth checking before any money or signature changes hands.

Ontario law is on your side at the door

Under Ontario's Consumer Protection Act rules, if you enter a contract because of unsolicited door-to-door marketing for a restricted product or service, the contract is void and you may keep the goods or services with no obligation. If you invited the business to your home, you still get a 10-day cooling-off period to cancel without reason or penalty. Companies selling energy contracts must be licensed by the Ontario Energy Board.

Nobody legitimate charges a fee to “unlock” a rebate

Every program on this page is applied for free, either by you or by your contractor. If someone wants a payment, a deposit or a subscription before your rebate can be “released”, that is not how any of these work.

Check the amount on the administrator's own page, not on a quote

Rebate figures change, and contractor websites go stale. Every card above links to the page the administrator publishes. If a quote shows a bigger number than the official page, ask why in writing before you sign.

Timing voids more claims than anything else

Several of these programs require an evaluation, a registration or a pre-approval before the work starts, and most have a deadline to apply afterwards. Starting early or applying late is the most common reason a homeowner who did everything else right gets nothing.

Be careful at the door

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warns about ads offering grants or equipment below market value, high-pressure door-to-door tactics, and contractors who take a deposit and then disappear or do poor work. Research the company before you give out your details or sign anything. Suspected fraud can be reported to the CAFC on 1-888-495-8501.

Never hand over your utility account login

No program needs your Hydro or utility password. A contractor may need your account number for an application; that is not the same thing.

Get it in writing

The program name, the exact amount, who applies, and what happens if the rebate is refused, all on the quote. “We will take care of the rebate” is not a term you can hold anyone to.
