Home Renovation Savings program in Ontario (2026)

Heat pumps, insulation, windows, solar, smart thermostats and appliances: what Home Renovation Savings pays, who qualifies, and the order to do things in.

Quick answer

Home Renovation Savings is Ontario's home energy rebate program, run by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy. It pays up to $12,000 for heat pumps, up to $10,000 for solar with batteries, up to $1,250 for attic insulation, $125 for smart thermostats and $25 to $200 for ENERGY STAR appliances, with more for whole-home work after an energy assessment.

Home Renovation Savings is Ontario's main home energy rebate program. It pays for upgrades from a $25 dishwasher rebate to up to $12,000 for a heat pump. The rules change depending on the upgrade, and a few of them, like pre-approval, cost people their rebate when they miss them. This guide puts the program's rebates in one place, with the rules that matter.

Independent guide. Canadian Energy Standard is a private company, not affiliated with or endorsed by Home Renovation Savings, Enbridge Gas, Save on Energy, the IESO or the Government of Ontario. Rebate applications go through the program and its registered contractors, and the program decides who qualifies. If your project needs a registered contractor, we can connect you with a licensed one. Amounts are as listed on homerenovationsavings.ca on October 18, 2026, so confirm current terms before you buy or install.

What the Home Renovation Savings program is

The Home Renovation Savings program is run by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy (the IESO's energy efficiency brand), with support from the Government of Ontario. It replaced the separate gas and electricity rebate programs with one website and two streams:

  • Without an assessment. Heat pumps, solar and batteries, attic insulation, smart thermostats and appliances. You can do one upgrade on its own.
  • With an assessment. Insulation across the home, windows and doors, heat pump water heaters and air sealing. You start with a home energy assessment and complete at least two upgrades.

Who qualifies

  • Homeowners. You must own the home. If you rent it out, the owner applies.
  • Eligible homes. Detached, semi-detached, row and townhomes, and mobile homes on a permanent foundation. Stacked townhomes are not eligible for the assessment stream, and homes occupied for six months or less don't qualify for heat pump rebates.
  • Gas-heated homes. An active Enbridge Gas residential account, heating mainly with a gas furnace or boiler.
  • Electric, oil, propane or wood-heated homes. Connected to the Ontario electricity grid. Cornwall Electric customers are generally not eligible, because they are on the Hydro-Québec grid.

Rebates without a home energy assessment

These are the quickest rebates to get. None of them needs an assessment:

UpgradeRebate
Heat pumpsUp to $12,000 (depends on heating fuel and size)
Solar panels + battery storageUp to $10,000 ($5,000 panels, $5,000 battery)
Attic insulationUp to $1,250
Cathedral ceiling or flat roof insulationUp to $750
Smart thermostat$125
Appliances$25 to $200 each

Heat pumps and attic insulation go through a program-qualified contractor, who handles the paperwork. Smart thermostats and appliances you can buy and install yourself. For solar there is no qualified contractor list, so you choose your own installer, and the battery rebate only applies when it's bundled with solar panels.

Heat pump rebates by heating fuel

  • Gas-heated homes: $500 per ton, up to $2,000, for a cold-climate air-source heat pump, or $3,000 for ground-source.
  • Electric, oil, propane or wood: $1,250 per ton, up to $7,500, for air-source, or $2,000 per ton, up to $12,000, for ground-source.
  • Rented heat pumps: $500 per ton, up to $2,000, for air-source, or $3,000 for ground-source.

Pre-approval is mandatory: a heat pump installed before approval isn't eligible. See the heat pump rebate worked examples, or, in Ottawa, our Ottawa heat pump page.

Home Renovation Savings appliance rebates

The appliance rebates are for ENERGY STAR Most Efficient models that replace an existing electric appliance:

ENERGY STAR Most Efficient applianceRebate
Heat pump clothes dryer$200
Induction cooktop or range$150
Washing machine$75
Fridge$50
Freezer$50
Dishwasher$25
  • Buy anywhere. Any retailer, online or in store. The appliance must be new, not used or refurbished.
  • Apply within 60 days. Upload your receipt within 60 days of purchase.
  • Check the model. Each appliance has its own qualified products list on the program website.
  • Recycle the old one. Install the new appliance, then recycle or dispose of the old unit properly.

Rebates with a home energy assessment

The assessment stream pays more for whole-home work. You book an initial assessment before any work starts, complete at least two upgrades, then have a follow-up assessment with the same energy advisor.

Upgrade (assessment path)Rebate
Home energy assessments (before and after)$600
Attic insulation to R-50$900 to $1,500, depending on starting level
Exterior wall insulation$1,200 to $3,600
Basement wall insulation$900 to $1,500
Crawlspace insulation$600 to $1,200
Windows, doors and skylights$100 per rough opening
Heat pump water heater$500
Air sealing (third upgrade or later)$200 to $250
Bonus for a third upgrade$500

Totals in this stream are capped at $5,000 for homes heated mainly with Enbridge natural gas and $10,000 for homes heated with electricity, oil, propane or wood. Rebates are paid within about 60 days by cheque, or 30 days by Interac e-Transfer, after the follow-up assessment. Not sure which stream fits? See do I need an energy assessment for rebates?

The order to do things in

  1. Decide which stream you're in. One quick upgrade, or several bundled with an assessment.
  2. Book the assessment or get pre-approval first. This is the step that most often costs people their rebate.
  3. Do the envelope before the equipment where you can. Insulation and air sealing can reduce the heat pump size you need.
  4. Keep every receipt and invoice. Appliance and thermostat claims need them within the deadline.

Watch out for scams

The program warns about fake websites, unauthorized rebate offers and people impersonating contractors. Home Renovation Savings doesn't sell door to door. Apply only through homerenovationsavings.ca, and be wary of anyone who says you're "pre-approved" before you've applied.
