Do home EV chargers qualify for rebates in Ontario?

Answered by the Canadian Energy Standard team · Updated September 13, 2026 · 3 min read

Quick answer

Home EV chargers aren't a listed upgrade in Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program. If you're adding solar at the same time, solar panels and bundled battery storage can qualify for up to $5,000 each.1

What the Home Renovation Savings program covers

Upgrades that don't need an energy assessment include heat pumps, attic insulation, smart thermostats, appliances, and solar panels with optional battery storage. EV chargers aren't on the list.12

Upgrades that pair well with an EV

  • Solar panels: up to $5,000, and battery storage bundled with solar up to $5,000 more.1
  • Smart thermostat: a $125 rebate, and it can help keep evening use down on time-of-use pricing.1

Check before you install a charger

  • Panel capacity: a Level 2 charger is a large load; some homes need load management or a panel upgrade.
  • Price plan: overnight charging on Ultra-Low Overnight costs 3.9¢ per kWh.3
  • Permits: electrical work must be done by a licensed electrical contractor with the required permits.

Common follow-up questions

Are there any EV incentives for the car itself?

Yes. The federal EV Affordability Program offers up to $5,000 for battery-electric vehicles in 2026.

Will a charger overload my panel?

It depends on your panel and other loads. A licensed contractor should check capacity first.
