What is an EnerGuide home energy evaluation?

Answered by the Canadian Energy Standard team · Updated September 13, 2026 · 4 min read

Quick answer

An EnerGuide evaluation is an in-home assessment by an energy advisor registered with Natural Resources Canada. It includes a blower door test for air leaks and gives you an EnerGuide rating and a report of recommended upgrades.1

What the energy advisor does

  • Inspects insulation levels, windows, doors and heating and cooling equipment.1
  • Runs a blower door test, which depressurizes the home to measure how much air leaks in.1
  • Enters the data into software to calculate your home's EnerGuide rating.

What you receive

An EnerGuide rating for your home and an energy efficiency report to help you decide on upgrades.1

Getting ready

  • Make attic and basement spaces accessible.1
  • Make sure the heating system is working.1
  • For programs with a follow-up evaluation, keep all paid invoices and receipts for your upgrades.1

How it connects to Ontario rebates

Some Home Renovation Savings upgrades, such as insulation across the home, windows and doors, heat pump water heaters and air sealing, start with a home energy assessment, and the program lists $600 back for the assessment itself.2

Different from our free consultation: our free phone assessment reviews your energy use and plans upgrades; an EnerGuide evaluation is a separate in-home test by a registered energy advisor.

Common follow-up questions

What is a blower door test?

A fan depressurizes the house so outside air flows in through gaps, and gauges measure how leaky the home is.

Do all rebates need an EnerGuide evaluation?

No. Heat pumps, attic insulation on its own, smart thermostats and solar with batteries don't require one under Home Renovation Savings.
